This week we've been hunting for one thing: pictures that didn't show up where they were supposed to. We found several independent causes, and all have now been fixed.
📷 Your pictures no longer disappear silently
If you send a picture in a message – to us or in the chat of a collaborative map – and something goes wrong, you will now be notified immediately. Previously, the picture could disappear without a single warning: the message seemed to go through, but the recipient got an empty bubble. Now the text and picture will remain in the text field, so you can try again.
🖼️ Valid pictures are no longer rejected
If the phone is under heavy load, the app could incorrectly conclude that a perfectly normal picture “could not be displayed”, and skip it. Now we distinguish between a format the app actually doesn't support and a phone that was just busy for a moment. The protection against camera RAW files, which no browser can render, has been kept.
⚡ Lists load much faster
Thumbnails didn't work at all – every single small picture in place cards, reviews, feed and “My Content” loaded the full-size original. For ten rows, this meant almost 64 MB. Now, real thumbnails are loaded, and the same screen view costs 0.3 MB. Pictures further down the page are only loaded when you scroll to them.
More fixes
- Place pictures that could never be displayed have been cleaned up and converted
- Dead image links now show a nice placeholder image instead of a broken icon
- Tapping a point in “My Content” finally takes you there on the map
- Old, uncompressed uploads have been shrunk – without a single saved link stopping to work
Thanks to the testers who reported this. It was one of you who helped us find the last one. Happy trails! 🏕️
